THERE’S a lot going on with Ford at the moment, not least the decision to shut the Transit plant at Southampton – but there are also some pretty smart new models being unveiled.
The Ecosport is the most interesting. Designed, engineered and launched in Brazil, it’s a Fiesta-based compact SUV or crossover that is set to go global under the new ‘One Ford’ banner.
Ford say the Ecosport combines the agility, affordability and fuel efficiency of a small car with the flexibility and spaciousness of an SUV. It will be powered by the award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine and is likely to cost around £14,000.
As for its looks, it’s one of those cars people will either love or hate. It looks positively aggressive, with its big, open-mouth grille, fog lights like machine guns from a James Bond Aston, and cladding on the side sills and bumpers.
MM verdict: The compact SUV sector is all the rage and this clever newcomer will find plenty of customers.
