(Picture is not the actual car)
WHAT a comedown! The flip side of landing a new job with a company car thrown in was that the space in the drive that had been occupied by my lovely big Audi was now being filled by a rather tatty Ford Escort Estate.
It was November 1986 and the Escort was a white 1983 model, registration number HYA908Y, that had been worked hard all its life. Nevertheless, it surprised me by how well it drove and it positively thrilled me when I visited the petrol station because my new employers paid for the fuel.
The Escort was not what I had in mind – nor what I had been promised! – when I accepted the job but, in truth, it was only a stopgap measure until the brand spanking new car arrived in the showroom. I actually used it for nearly five months, until April of 1987.
