A NEW city car from the Volkswagen stable? Now that rings a bell. It seems like only yesterday that we were being shown the new VW up! – and its Škoda-badged stablemate bears an uncanny resemblance.
The Citigo represents the Czech-based company’s first foray into the burgeoning city car sector and it’s a reasonable bet that its main differentiating factor from the VW up! will be in the price tag.
The Škoda is already nipping through the traffic in Prague and is due in the UK and the rest of Europe early this summer.
The manufacturers say it offers a lot of space in a small package, which seems to be very much the vogue, and they promise fuel consumption in the upper 60s, super-low emissions and a choice of three- or five-door styles with three-cylinder 1.0-litre engines.
They’re also making a big deal of all the cubby-holes and hiding places, not to mention a ‘bag hook’ built into the glovebox handle and a photograph holder on the central console. Whatever will they think of next?
MM verdict: Shame it’s quite as identikit as the VW but it’ll make its mark.
