A joint project between Subaru and Toyota has produced a serious new contender in the sports coupé sector.
The new-from-scratch BRZ was unveiled at the recent Tokyo Motor Show and has the looks and the pedigree to make a real impact.
Its super-lightweight frame contributes to what is said to be outstanding handling, while the low-slung naturally aspirated 2.0-litre Boxer engine powers it to a top speed around 145mph.
The BRZ is a 2+2 configuration, but its vital statistics suggest that fully grown adults may need to be contortionists to squeeze into the back.
Curiously Subaru goes against the trend by abandoning the turbo but it is an authentic rear-drive coupé. It is due in the UK next July and will probably carry a tag of around £26,000.
MM verdict: Bound to attract a following.
