Say hello to the latest contender for the title of daftest car name. The Volkswagen up! (lower-case ‘u’ and obligatory exclamation mark) is the replacement for the unexciting Fox as the company’s representative in the city car sector.
The little four-seater, which reaches showrooms this month, looks like being roomy, lively and frugal. It features a new generation of three-cylinder petrol engines and there are plans to release an electric version before too long.
There are three specs: the entry-level take up!; the comfort-oriented move up!; and the top-of-the-range high up! Yes – ample scope for embarrassment and misunderstanding when discussing the options with the salesman. Phrases like ‘lash up!’ spring to mind.
An interesting new safety technology in the up! is an optional emergency braking system, which cuts in below 18mph and uses a laser sensor to detect a possible collision and apply the brakes.
MM verdict: strong new arrival in the city car sector.
