Hyundai have long been producing practical, good-value cars – but their steady ascent in the automotive hierarchy and quality league has really gained pace of late.
And this sleek new coupé has so many good things about it that it could well provide the Korean carmakers with a whole new army of fans.
Apart from its good looks, the Veloster’s Unique Selling Point is its 1+2 door configuration, with a single rear door on one side for ease of access – like that of the MINI Clubman but of a sensible size and on the passenger side.
The Veloster gets its power from a 1.6-litre petrol engine, has the option of a six-speed gearbox, and has the usual Hyundai heap of standard gear, such as a touch-screen media centre, Bluetooth connectivity with voice recognition and reversing sensors. And, of course, the standard five-year warranty.
Prices go from a tad under £18k and it will be in UK showrooms in February.
MM verdict: A genuine threat to some of the mainstream manufacturers.
