A GROUP of rare black and white photographs have been discovered in a shoebox in a Dorset house and have been entered into the Charterhouse classic car and automobilia auction in November.
“The photographs were taken by the late Gordon Francis who lived in Shaftesbury and was a well-known motor sport photographer in the 1950s and 1960s,” said the auction house’s Matthew Whitney. “The owner of the photographs was decorating a bedroom and decided to enter the surplus items into one of our antique auctions, which is when we discovered the photographs in an old shoebox!”
The pictures include Stirling Moss wrestling with the wheel of the famous Works Mercedes 300SLR, and a group of motorcycle-related photographs including scrambling, grasstrack and trials. The Moss photo should make between £100 and £150.
Sherborne-based Charterhouse’s auction of classic cars, motorcycles and automobilia is being held at The Royal Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallet, on Sunday 6th November.
