A diesel engine drives the front wheels while an electric motor powers the rear ones, making this rather butch-looking newcomer from Peugeot a most unusual type of hybrid.
The flagship version of the 508 SW range was one of many models unveiled at last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, and with its jacked-up suspension and lavish levels of equipment, it turned more than a few heads.
Among a host of standard stuff are electric front seats, head-up display, panoramic glass roof, tinted acoustic laminated side windows, half-leather trim and the latest audio and sat-nav. Power comes from a 2.0-litre diesel hybrid drivetrain and there is an all-electric zero-emissions mode that contributes to an impressive combined fuel economy figure of 67.2mpg.
Externally the car has a more macho look than its siblings, an impression Peugeot are obviously keen to emphasise with their description of the car’s LED daytime lights as ‘giving the impression of three vertical lion claws on each side of its floating grille’. The car is due in the UK next spring.
MM verdict: a winner – if the price is right.
