It’s hard to think of a carmaker in history that has undergone quite such a transformation in quality, success and image as the Czech firm Škoda. Under VW’s guidance, the jokes have long since stopped, the cars have become hugely popular and they win awards as a matter of course.
This latest addition to the firm’s estate car range won’t feature too prominently in any beauty contests but you can be sure it will be a fine vehicle. It arrives at the end of May with a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines.
Škoda say its appearance has ‘new emotional dimensions’, helped by a new-shaped bumper and some plastic cladding, which suggests their marketing copywriters still lag some way behind their engineers.
MM verdict: As likely a success as anything in these strange times.
