Poor old Saab, in deeper water than most right now, have finally unveiled a model that has been in the planning for years.
With every motoring niche now seemingly filled to overflowing, carmakers are now creating new ones and the 9-3X is aimed at drivers wanting a decent all-rounder but without the image of the big butch SUVs.
It’s a slightly jacked-up version of the Swedish firm’s 9-3 XWD estate, and comes with all-wheel-drive on the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol version or front-wheel-drive on the 1.9 diesel.
Both are fast – 130mph-plus – and fuel efficient and they’ll be arriving here this summer. Bearing in mind the competition and the state of the market, it’s hard to imagine who’ll buy one.
MM verdict: Unlikely to cure Saab’s financial ills.
