The big cat’s all-new four-door flagship builds on the success of the XK and XF models and continues the burnishing of Jaguar’s reputation.
All the firm’s new engines will be available in the XJ: the 3.0-litre V6 diesel, 5.0-litre V8 and 5.0-litre supercharged V8, now joined by a 470hp version of the supercharged engine. Standard- and long-wheelbase models are available.
The car has all the luxury touches you’d expect plus a few you wouldn’t, like a touch-screen TV to amuse the passengers, and a panoramic glass roof to lighten up the interior. All this and it will do 40mpg. Prices go from £52,500 up to a whopping £88,000 and the first cars are due for delivery early in 2010.
MM verdict: There’ll be quivers of concern in boardrooms the length of Germany.
